Engagement, Academics, Social Adjustment, and Independence: The Achievements of Elementary and Middle School Students with Disabilities

This report looks at the characteristics, experiences and outcomes of a nationally representative sample of more than 11,000 students who received special education services. More specifically it considers the following questions:

What are the achievements of students with disabilities in key outcome domains?
How do achievements vary for students with different kinds of disabilities?
What individual, household, and school factors are related to more positive outcomes for students with disabilities?

Descriptive findings as well as multivariate methods are used in this report.

Update: Since the first posting of this report corrections to the figures for Students with Disabilities on Exhibit 5-2 (page 5-4) have been made. Changes also were made to the corresponding text in the subheading "Classroom social behavior" on pages 5-4 to 5-5. The original version contained responses from Language Arts teachers in Special Education settings only whereas the corrected data contain the information gathered from Language Arts teachers in Special Education and General Education settings combined.
